Trust The News

– How do you design news with trust in the AI era? That became a key question for the studios work. Trust matters more than ever for news media. Our world is changing at large and we operate in a rapidly changing media landscape.

I held a talk at UC Berkeley, California about the design project under the title; Trust The News for the Society for News Design in April, where I talked about the design.

”I’m just a Swede on the other side of the ocean”

In the process of designing I researched “What is The American News Design DNA?”

A journey that took me all the way back to when the first American newspaper were born, gazing toward the Statue of Liberty,  Marlon Brando’s iconic white t-shirt in A Streetcar Named Desire , re-reading the American classic The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott. Fitzgerald, cross thinking on the New York City Street Grid and getting lost in Space … and being saved by a typeface.

One of the key findings is; Blackletter are today strongly associated with American newspaper’s heritage. We wanted this new news brand to clearly associate and show respect to the proud history of the newspapers.  In the work with selecting typefaces we collaborated with Christian SchwartzCommercial Type, New York.

View the case study on why ”Blackletter is newspapers heritage”.

We enjoyed collaborating with the projects own site architect; Isaiah Hassanali, 2040 Ventures for the digital development and the building of the platforms design.

This was to this day the studios most challenging project. On the task designing an AI news product, read the post; Designing for AI — Human first!
