Design in Japan

Hello,

The studio’s been; ⛩️ ‘Away in Japan’ 不在 …

I experienced that Japanese design is distinct, original and visual and touching all senses. What’s striking is the humanistic, design thinking culture, striving for a design that makes daily life function for the 123,8 M people in Japan and 42,7 M yearly visitors! The design capture the past, the present and the future like no other place on earth. A journey through four destinations, alike a Samurai trail, I’m sharing my best slices of design sushi.

Big in Japan

OSAKA The American culture is big in Japan. Osaka designed ‘The America-mura’, in short; Amemura; is a youth village devoted only to American culture, street art, music, fashion and clublife. American culture has heavily influenced Japanese design – particularly in fashion, like Japanese Raw Denim.

The old grid

KYOTO, dates 794 AD, and is built on an ancient square street grid; Jō-Bō system, (originally from China), that characterises Kyoto where the old buddhist temples, shrines, Geisha’s and traditional Kaiseki culture still is practised and trained.

Mount Fujis heritage

HAKONE The form, storytelling and colour of mount Fuji builds an iconic brand. The heritage of Fuji san stems from the serie Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji by Hokusai all hand painted in the ‘then’ new Prussian blue. Hakone is the trails; Moment of Zen.

Murakamis backstreet

TOKYO If you read Murakami you know it’s in the backstreets you find Tokyo. We found Jinbōchō Book Town a true vintage book heaven and the main pick; latest Murakami book; The tale of Kaho, Japanese edition.

– Thank you (Arigatō gozaimasu). I just wish I had nine lifes.
